Course summary

Year 12 Throughout Year 12 students will create two coursework projects, focusing primarily on building up their creative skills in any of the following areas: Painting and drawing, Photography, 3D, Ceramics, Digital Media, Textiles, Printmaking, and Contextual Studies. It is expected that students will organize their development work in sketchbooks. In addition to this, there is an emphasis on developing skills and ideas through project work to the realization and creation of a response. Year 13 In Year 13 students will develop one major project based on a personal theme and a contextual study on a topic of their choice, along with an essay between 1000 – 3000 words (a compulsory component of the course). The emphasis on this is a personal response; students generate their own independent project brief following a sustained investigation. Entry requirements

Art and Design at GCSE and achieved a Grade 4 or above. Students wishing to transfer from other creative disciplines must seek advice from the HoD. It is not recommended if you have not followed a creative GCSE, but this can be reviewed on an individual basis with the HOD/HOF

How you'll be assessed

Component 1: Portfolio and is the coursework element of the specification. From February 1st , students begin work on the exam unit, known as Component 2: Externally set assignment. This consists of a preparatory period of typically 8 weeks, before an exam of 15 hours over 3 days. The preparation period is used to generate a sketchbook of work, normally over a 10 - 12 week period, leading to the creation of a final response created under exam conditions. Both the prep work and the exam time count towards the assessment of this unit, which accounts for 40% of the overall grade.
