Students read widely across a range of literature from different genres (drama, poetry and prose) in order for thoughtful connections to be made between texts.There is an emphasis on comparing the thoughts, feelings and attitudes of different writers and the influences of shared contexts upon their works, as well as analysing the use and effect of form, structure and language. We also offer visits to A Level Literature study conference.All students will be entered for the AQA A Level Literature qualification at the end of Year 13. Component 1: (40%) Love Through the Ages: Shakespeare, Poetry, and Prose: Study of one play, one novel and one collection of pre-1900 poetry Students will also be examined on two ‘unseen’ poems.
All students are required to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs. *This also includes achieving a grade 4 and 5 in GCSE English Language and English Literature and a grade 3 or above in GCSE Maths. Subject specific requirements: Minimum Grade 6 at GCSE in English Literature and English Language • Students must enjoy reading. • Students must be prepared to study independently, read widely, carry out a range of research tasks and write essays on a regular basis
Written examination: ‘Open book’ in Section C only (novel and poetry collection) Component 2: (40%) Texts in Shared Contexts Students explore aspects of literature that are connected through a clearly defined time period: Option A: WW1 and its Aftermath. Study of one prose text, one collection of WW1 poetry and one drama text, at least one of which must be written post-2000. Students will also be examined on an ‘unseen’ extract. Component 3: (20%) Comparative essay on two texts (2500 words), one of which must be pre-1900, linked by a common theme or an aspect of context. One text will be taught in class. Students are expected to choose and study the second text independently.
