Eton’s Learning Support Department provides adjustments for pupils with learning difficulties or special educational needs so they can access education and reach their potential.

“The aim of the department, then and today, is to provide appropriate provision to pupils that cognitively have the ability to access education but need adjustments to support them in reaching their full potential; and to ensure that all pupils, no matter their learning difficulty or special educational need, have equal opportunities and access during their time here at Eton.”

About 8% of Eton pupils receive some input from the Learning Support Department.

The boarding community provides wrap-around pastoral care while nurturing leadership and service.

Eton has a large, extensively staffed Music Department delivering more than 1,300 individual instrument lessons each week.

Music is offered at A Level through two courses covering classical music and rock, pop, and jazz, with music technology included in the curriculum.

“The large number of boys opting for music at GCSE and A Level mean that we are able to tailor our academic offering to individual boys’ musical tastes. We offer two separate courses at each level, with one leaning more towards western classical music and one towards rock, pop and jazz. Music technology forms an important part of the curriculum in all year groups.”

Approximately 20 fee-paying Sixth Form entry places are available each year.

The co-curriculum includes music, sport, drama, CCF, volunteering, debating, bridge, polo, climbing and society meetings with speakers.

The future-skills courses are available to pupils in Years 10–13 at UK state schools.

Orwell Award applications for 2027 entry close on Sunday 20 September.

The stated minimum is six GCSEs at grade 7 or equivalent, although successful applicants are likely to exceed it significantly.

Musically ambitious pupils often gain choral and organ scholarships at Oxford and Cambridge, as well as scholarships to UK and overseas music conservatoires.

“Beyond Eton, boys with music career ambitions often secure the most prestigious of choral and organ scholarships at Oxford and Cambridge, and increasingly Eton musicians win scholarships to music conservatoires in the UK and overseas.”

Increasing numbers of pupils supported by the department progress to Oxbridge, Ivy League and Russell Group universities.
