Course summary

IBCP = 2 x IBCP diploma subjects + 1 x vocational subject Why this course? The study of art is much more than just training of the eye. Through the study and practice of visual arts we are cultivating the act of observing, and in doing so we learn to perceive the world differently, as well as art. During this course students create a body of work that demonstrates a solid understanding of the vocabulary of the artist, through reading, writing, thinking, and questioning what they do as artists. The programme is intended to develop understanding of history and art appreciation; with students showing evidence of systematic research and investigation. Student profile The IB Visual Arts course is intended for self-motivated students who are seriously interested in the study of art. The course not only builds art-making skills and confidence but helps students to develop important analytical skills, divergent ways of thinking and creative problem-solving. Reflecting the IB emphasis on international-mindedness, students are encouraged to explore art from a wide range of contexts and practices, thus broadening understanding and appreciation for the diversity of creative and aesthetic expression. Progression • Further education courses such as the BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (QCF) • Higher education courses such as BTEC Higher National Diplomas in art and design subjects, or direct to a BA Honours degree with an art and design focus • Apprenticeships or other training in an art or design related sector • Employment in a related sector.
