Psychology
The Duchess's Community High School
Course summary
Psychology is the scientific study of the brain and behaviour. It aims to understand why people do things, and it does this in a scientific way: Psychology uses scientific methods such as experiments, observation and measurement, as well as scientific terminology. Today, Psychology is seen as a science, rather than the ‘popular’ Psychology that we have all seen on television. What will I study during the course? Throughout the course, you will be introduced to many theories, studies and concepts. Because human behaviour is complicated, Psychology has used different approaches in trying to explain behaviour. In Year 1 you will learn about the biological, cognitive and behavioural approaches. You will learn topics such as memory, research methods, social influence and the explanations and treatments for mental disorders such as phobias, depression and OCD. In Year 2 you will learn about schizophrenia, gender and Forensic Psychology.
