Course summary

The course offers 3 modern history courses, with the opportunity to do an independent study of the learner’s choice. The course offers four units. Year 1 comprises 2 units: 1. Britain 1900 - 1951: A study of how modern Britain developed, through two world wars and in between. This was a period of great social change and the unit investigates how the different political parties in government tackle these challenges. 2. Russia 1894-1941: A study of Tsar Nicholas II in Russia and how Lenin and Stalin made Russia the world’s first communist state after two revolutions in 1917. Year 2 comprises 2 units. 3. Popular culture and the Witchcraze of the 16th and 17th Centuries: This theme focuses on the nature and development of popular culture as well as the circumstances surrounding the growth, extent, and decline of the Witchcraze in the 16th and 17th centuries. Students should understand the similarities and differences in behavior between individuals and communities in terms of their participation in cultural events and adherence to prevailing beliefs or practices. 4. Extended essay: This unit gives students the opportunity to independently research a topic of their choice in order to produce a 3000-4000-word essay.
