Course summary
Why are some countries more developed than others? How will climate change threaten our everyday lives? What are the consequences of migration on societies? Geography plays a crucial role in understanding our world; it contributes to our knowledge of the rapidly changing environmental and social challenges facing us and how we should tackle them. The course will offer you the chance to get to grips with some of the big questions which affect our world and understand the social, economic and physical forces and processes which shape and change our world. Geography students will study a wide range of interesting topics such as urban issues, world development, extreme environments, rivers and hazards – to name a few. You will learn through multiped mediums and develop many skills, for example, using maps, GIS skills, data analysis, photos, videos, podcasts, and attending lectures. You will be encouraged to frame your own questions using higher-level thinking skills and show your grasp of complex issues through report and essay writing. Fieldwork will be an essential part of your A-level course. Geography is a broad subject which provides lots of opportunities for future progression. For example, Geography is an obvious choice for careers in sustainability and green issues, urban regeneration, energy supply and managing the effects of climate change. An understanding of global economics forms an important part of Geography and is useful for careers in business.
