Physical Education / Sports Studies
Course summary
Across two years of study, Physical Education will cover three distinct and stand-alone topic areas. Alongside this there is a practical assessment (15% of overall grade), as well as an extended coursework element (also 15% of final grade). Anatomy and physiology are the study of the body, its systems and how it responds to exercise. In this unit (studied in both years) you will learn about the differing body systems- musculoskeletal, respiratory, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, as well as how forces act on the body and how energy is produced. Sports psychology focuses on the performers mind. This unit (studied in both years) covers how performers learn skills, commit actions to memory and the theories related to personality, aggression, arousal, anxiety and the impacts of a crowd. The final sociocultural aspect of this course looks at the development of sport through history, from pre-industrial Britain to modern day sport. This area looks at current issues facing athletes and sport today, the media, violence, drugs, and barriers to participation.
