Course summary

What will you study? Students will study a range of set films from a variety of contexts, including Hollywood cinema, silent film, historical European film movements, experimental film, documentary, short and non-English language film. Students will complete two written examinations, and one NEA (Non examined assessment) producing their own short films. What skills will you develop? Students will develop analytical, discursive writing skills and become confident readers of film in terms of key concepts such as narrative, genre, aesthetics, spectatorship and representation. Students will develop research and production skills in order to work both independently and collaboratively with others in producing their own short films. Students will engage with film’s broad, cultural and historical heritage to gain an understanding of how meaning has been created through film from the silent era to the present day.
