Paper 1: Literary Genres Aspects of Tragedy Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ Hardy’s ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’ Miller’s ‘Death of a Salesman’ Exam: 2 hours 30mins (40%) Closed book Paper 2: Texts and Genres Elements of Crime Writing Agatha Christie’s ‘The Murder of Roger Ackroyd’; Kate Atkinson’s ‘When Will There Be Good News’ A selection of pre-1914 poetry Exam: 3 hours (40%) Open book Non-exam assessment: Theory and Independence Two essays: 1,250–1,500 words each. Both essays must interpret texts through the critical prism of Marxism, Feminism, Post-Colonialism or Eco-criticism. All texts need to be studied and read independently. This approach is intended to prepare students for their academic pursuits at university level.
