Course summary
Sociology is the study of the contemporary social world and as such you will explore the connections between the academic theory you will evaluate and your own experience of the world. You will investigate current affairs to scrutinise social issues and examine the usefulness of legislation and policy put into place to deal with the problems faced in society. Sociology is a versatile subject that develops a broad skill set including critical scrutiny of research and the formulation of rational arguments. Students learn a variety of academic skills, including analytical thinking, verbal and written communication, and practical application of theories. Sociology is a flexible subject that leads to many degree courses. Potential career pathways include public policy research, roles in the civil service, social research, policing, probation work and roles in central and local government.
