Spanish
Course summary
We want our students to enhance their linguistic skills and promote and develop their capacity for critical thinking on the basis of their knowledge and understanding of the language, culture and society. We want them to become citizens of the world and develop a passion for languages. To do this we will explore, discuss and analyse social issues, trends, political, intellectual and artistic culture, past and present, of Spanish speaking countries. Our students will develop their ability to interact effectively with Spanish speakers in speech and in writing, including through online media. They will also develop language learning skills and strategies, including communication strategies to sustain communication and build fluency and confidence. The book and movie we have chosen have been considered carefully and the topics that are present in them enable students to engage critically, developing an appreciation of sophisticated and creative uses of the language and understanding them within their cultural and social context. Students wishing to study Spanish at University will be well-prepared, not only through effective delivery of the core content, but through access to ample wider reading and extra-curricular provision, including theatre visits and speaking and writing workshops. This course also complements other pathways at LSS, providing academic rigour alongside other A Levels, helping students to develop their oracy, writing skills and essential communication skills.
