Course summary

The aim of this course is to offer students an engaging and effective introduction to core concepts within Psychology. Students will be able to : • Develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Psychology and how they relate to each other • Develop their interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject • Develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods • Develop competence and confidence in practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills • Understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society • Develop the skills needed to apply theoretical knowledge to a new theoretical or practical context • Ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific information, theories and evidence Themes/Units • Introductory topics in Psychology: Social influence, Memory, Attachment and Psychopathology • Psychology in context: Approaches, Biopsychology and Research methods • Issues and options in psychology: Issues and debates, Relationships, Schizophrenia and Addiction
