Course summary

Why choose to study Politics? Why is there still an unelected House of Lords? Is Communism completely irrelevant? How has the world become more peaceful since 1945? Lively, relevant, controversial... there are many ways to describe A Level Politics. There’s no denying that it’s one of the most interesting and engaging qualifications you can choose. Covering news and current affairs from the UK and global, it helps you understand both how the UK and the world are run and develops research, written communication and debate skills. Topics are clearly and logically structured and include: You’ll study British government and politics, including the workings of parliament, the role of the prime minister, political parties and their policies, and how patterns of participation have changed in recent years. You’ll also study the key political ideologies of conservatism, liberalism and socialism. In addition to these, you will study one further influential ideology – nationalism. You’ll also focus on themes of global politics, such as the rise of China, the ‘decline’ of America and the challenges of globalisation, terrorism, population migration and climate change. Your understanding of current world affairs will be enhanced as you study how the world is ordered, the rise of multipolarity, poverty and debt, and the role of international organisations and non-state actors.
