Course summary
What will I study? The new A-Level qualification, while retaining traditional and original core content, has been refreshed to include mathematics, modern and contemporary technologies, materials and processes. The new qualification places a greater emphasis on understanding and applying iterative design processes. Students will use their creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes / products that solve real and relevant problems while considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. What skills will I develop? • You will develop your knowledge and understanding of contemporary design and technology practices as well as being able to recognise and overcome challenges and constraints when working towards the production of high-quality products that add value. • You will also develop your creativity and be able to draw on a range of skills and knowledge from other subject areas including Mathematics (15% of New Product Design A-Level exam), Science, History and Geography. How will this subject help me with my future career? A-Level Product Design is a creative course with transferrable skills that is an excellent foundation for anybody considering careers within the Design Industry, Architecture, and Engineering, Careers in the Built Environment, Cost Management, Project Management, and Surveying. The course allows students to gain a core understanding of the design process and then specialise in a design area of their choice.
