Course summary

A Level Media Studies offers a broad, engaging and stimulating course of study which offers learners the opportunity to develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of the media and to develop analytical and practical production skills. Learners study a wide range of media forms and products through the theoretical framework of media, which encompasses media language, representations, media industries and audiences. Media products are also studied in relation to relevant contexts, and learners will study, apply and evaluate a range of theories and theoretical approaches. Learners also develop practical production skills and apply their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework to a cross-media production in two forms. Learning styles Students will learn the creative and technical skills to put their ideas into practice. This subject is 70% external examination assessment, so students will need to be comfortable in the preparation of answers for written examinations Subject Combinations and Progression Students will gain an understanding of how the Media Industry works, and study themes that run consistently across all aspects of the Media industry. Learners taking this course would be expected to be on a full programme of study comprising at least two other subject areas. Subject Modules and Assessment The course comprises of 3 sections: • Audience and Representation • Industry and Language • NEA – The practical component There are a number of core media texts that have to be studied.
