Course summary

Geology is a science qualification that can be used to gain entry to many university degree courses, not just geology. The specification will aim to provide knowledge and practical experience of geology, both in the field and the laboratory, and it demonstrates the use of this knowledge and experience. Geology is the branch of science concerned with the structure, evolution and dynamics of the Earth and with the exploitation of the mineral and energy resources that it contains. Geology is ideally suited to fulfil the educational purpose of demonstrating the relevance of science to society. It applies physical, chemical and biological principles to the investigation of the Earth, but also involves a distinctive scientific methodology involving internal and external Earth processes to explain the evolution of the planet through geological time. The application of geology to human activities and needs is widely addressed in the specification, providing for relevance and the development of a broad range of transferable skills. Geology combines well with many subjects, most notably chemistry, physics, maths, geography, biology and computing, though many combinations are possible.
