Course summary

Biology plays a key part in science and technology which deals with how and why things behave as they do. The importance of biology cannot be overstated; it is vital for understanding inheritance and disease, for improving health and physiological performance, and for assessing the impact of human activity on the biodiversity and the environment. The units of study allow students to develop an understanding of cell ultrastructure and biochemistry which underpin all aspects of life. This knowledge is then built upon in the study of the structure and physiology in a wide range of organisms. A key part of the course relates to making links between these systems to develop an understanding of interactions between chemicals, organisms and the environment. The WJEC 'AS/A2' level syllabus provides the opportunity for students to be inspired by the contribution of the biological sciences to developments in healthcare and environmental protection. It can provide a springboard for them to be involved in the scientific breakthroughs of the future.
