Assessment
The content will be assessed across the three distinct but related disciplines of performing, composing and appraising. It is divided into a total of six units, three AS units and three A2 units. AS Units Unit 1 Performing 12% of qualification Externally assessed by an examiner (a performance standard of grade 5 or above is required to achieve top band marks in this area). Unit 2 Composing 12% of qualification Externally assessed by an examiner. Unit 3 Appraising 16% of qualification (a secure level of music theory is required for this aspect of the course). This is concentrated on two areas of study: * Western Classical Tradition with focus on The Symphony 1760-1830, including one set work, Symphony No.103 by Haydn. * Musical Theatre (Porter, Rodgers, Schonberg and Lloyd-Webber) A2 Units Learners must choose either option A in Units 4 & 5 or option B in units 4 & 5. Unit 4 Performing Option A 22% or B 14% Externally assessed by an examiner. Unit 5 Composing Option A 14% or B 22% Externally assessed by an examiner. Unit 6 Appraising 24% of qualification Written examination: 2 hrs 15mins. The written examination is concentrated on two areas of study. * The Symphony 1830-1910, including one set work, Symphony No.1 in C minor, Mvt 4 by Brahms. * Music of the Twentieth and Twenty First Centuries with focus on Chamber Music in Wales and American Musical Theatre.
