Course summary

Why take the course? The study of life itself, biology is the investigation of living systems and the theories and principles behind them. A Level Biology provides a solid grounding in analytical thinking, writing reports and clear communication – all of which are useful life skills. You will undertake lab and field experiments which underpin the theoretical study; they also hone your teamwork skills and practical abilities. It’s an exciting time to be a biologist, as we are working to solve the biggest challenges currently facing humans: fighting disease, protecting the environment and feeding our growing population in a sustainable manner. Summary of what is studied (specification) Cells, biological molecules, exchange and transport systems, disease and the immune system, biodiversity, evolution, organ systems for excretion, homeostasis, bioenergetics, genetics, ecosystems and sustainability. Where could this qualification take you? Biology A Level can lead to careers in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy and other health-related professions. Higher education options can include degrees in Biology, Zoology, Botany, Ecology, Biochemistry and other ‘pure’ science degrees.
