Course summary

What will you study in Year 12? The course develops your algebraic skills from GCSE such as solving quadratic equations and transforming graphs including that of the trigonometric functions. You will be introduced to calculus techniques for finding the gradient and areas under curves and use these to model real life situations. You will also learn how to use logarithms to solve exponential equations and also how to solve trigonometric equations in both degrees and radians. The Statistics element of the course does again build on the work from GCSE and also introduces more robust techniques for analysing data, probability, statistical distributions and hypothesis testing. The Mechanics section of the course introduces kinematics and Newton’s laws. What will you study in Year 13? The Core elements cover further manipulation of algebra, functions, graphs, proof, along with more advanced techniques of differentiation and integration, numerical methods to solve equations and simple differential equations. The Statistics and Mechanics elements of the course further extend the year 1 content, for example by using the normal distribution to model scenarios and considering friction within models respectively. At SHSG the A level Mathematics curriculum has been designed so that the more complex elements of the course (Integration, Differentiation and Trigonometry) are taught earlier to allow for more practice and consolidation
