Course summary

If you enjoy listening to music of many styles and traditions, playing a musical instrument as a soloist and in groups and have the desire to create your own original music compositions, then you will find this course challenging and enjoyable. Performance – You will be expected to take part in a range of solo and ensemble performance activities during the two years. There will be the opportunity to develop your performance skills including sight-reading and improvisation. In the first year, a six minute recital will take place of pieces which are grade 5 and above. In the second year, an eight minute recital will take place of pieces which are grade 6 and above. Composition – In the first year, you will compose two pieces, one to a set brief and the second in response to a different brief or as a free composition. In the second year, you will compose two pieces, one in response to the free choice brief/free composition and one in response to a brief assessing technique. The two pieces must have a combined duration of at least four and a half minutes in the first year and six minutes in the second year. Listening and Appraising – There are six areas of study, each containing two set works in the first year and an additional set work in the second year. The areas of study include vocal music, instrumental music, film music, popular music and jazz, fusions and twentieth century music. By developing listening and analysing skills students will be assessed on musical elements, musical contexts and musical language. You will sit an examination which will include multiple-choice, short open and extended writing essay style questions.
