Course summary

Who is the course for? This course is for students who are interested in developing their interest in the global environment and the relationship between the physical and human world. What you’ll learn: During your study of Geography A Level you will explore a wide range of current topics, keeping at the forefront of the world's most recent and most pressing issues. In Physical Geography you will explore the challenges of living with a range of natural hazards, the ways in which our coastline has been shaped and how this is changing daily, and the changing water and carbon cycles within the context of the Amazon Rainforest and Eden Basin. In Human Geography you will explore the impact of global systems and governance on our world, how places are changing both on our doorstep and beyond, and the challenges of providing resources to an ever growing population. You will also complete an independent fieldwork enquiry which will include 4 days of fieldwork. What subjects this goes well with: English Literature, History, Economics, Politics, Sociology, Spanish, Media Studies, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology. How you’ll learn: Classroom based learning/Independent research What you can do next: Geography is a facilitating subject that will support you in pursuing any degree. This is because studying Geography will give you an excellent set of transferable skills including the ability to collect, analyse and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, conduct research, employ statistical methods and ICT skills. There are also opportunities to go directly into technician level employment or an apprenticeship as the skills developed by studying Geography are looked on favourably in any profession. How to prepare for this course: Revise and make connections between parts of the GCSE Geography course. Look at the Royal Geographical Society’s website, specifically, the ‘what’s on’ page, and watch any lectures that take your interest. Read the news and make connections with what you have studied in Geography before.
