Course summary

Who is the course for? If you are progressing from GCSE music or are proficient musician planning a career as a musical performer or composer, or simply enjoy listening to and performing all kinds of music, then A level music could be for you. The course is excellent preparation for higher education courses in music, but it is equally valuable as a second or third choice to complement your other A level subject choices. You'll need strong performance skills and a willingness to engage with a range of musical styles and genres. What you’ll learn: You will work on skills in performing, composing, and appraising but can specialise in either music performance or composing. You will develop a more sophisticated level of interpretation and expression through regular music tuition, coaching, rehearsal, and performance. You will explore both classical and popular music, focus on the development of the symphony and the orchestra and be able to evaluate and critically analyse a variety of musical styles and genres. You will study set works in detail and get an understanding of how composers developed their compositions, learning more about analytical language and musical terminology. You will be composing your own music in different styles and finding out about the current technology available to create and present music. What subjects this goes well with: All courses How you’ll learn: Classroom based learning All A Level music students have a FREE peripatetic instrumental lesson each week for a minimum of 30 minutes in addition to classroom lessons. What you can do next: A Level Music provides a foundation for studying music at higher education level, including conservatoires and universities. There are apprenticeship opportunities in roles connected to music in sectors such as education, the media and arts administration. Studying A Level Music does not mean you have to go into the music industry. A Level music is highly regarded by top employers in a range of sectors due to the transferable skills that you will gain through this course. Entry requirements

Minimum GCSE grade 5 in English Language and Maths, GCSE grade 6 in Music, You will also be required to attend an audition. A Level Music - Audition As part of your application to the Sydney Russell Sixth Form, you are required to complete an audition, in order to be accepted onto the Music A Level course. Music A Level requires students to perform at a high ability and so through completing an audition, we can check that you are a suitable candidate for the course. Requirements Perform a piece of music of at least 2 minutes in duration. We will not provide accompaniment though backing tracks can be played if wanted. You must bring along your instrument and music, except of course for instruments such as drums/piano, where they will be provided. If you do know own your own instrument and you need one provided for your audition, please inform the school.

Performance Recital, 35% – 10-12mins recital Composition Portfolio, 25% – 2 compositions (1x Free, 1x Brief) External Exam, 40% – 1 exam, 2hours, 15mins
