Who is the course for? This course is for students who have an interest in current and political affairs and who seek an understanding as to how our country and others are governed. What you’ll learn: Politics at Sydney Russell is split into three papers. UK politics is the first area of study where you will gain an understanding of how the government of the UK works as well as how politics affects the government. You will then move on to gain an understanding of US politics with a heavy focus on how the two systems can be compared. Finally, you will study four core ideologies that have shaped the political world we live in today (liberalism, socialism, conservatism and feminism). A study of politics gives you the ability to understand the world we live in today and get involved with some of the most important debates of our time. Current events have meant that there has surely never been a more fascinating time to study politics with issues like Brexit, climate change, the Black Lives Matter movement and violence against women all of utmost importance to everyone. You will also gain a variety of transferable skills that are highly sought after by many professions including the ability to create and decipher arguments, the ability to analyse texts and the ability to come to reasoned conclusions. What subjects this goes well with: History, Economics, Geography, English Literature, Sociology, Mathematics How you’ll learn: Classroom based learning What you can do next: A Level Politics provides the opportunity to progress to degree subjects such as HSPS, PPE, International relations, history, classics, liberal arts, law and archaeology. Higher and degree apprenticeships exist in law, cultural heritage and the Civil Service for which the skills developed in Politics are essential.
