Course summary

Who is the course for? This course is for students who would enjoy exploring a topic of their choosing in greater depth, whilst enhancing and improving their existing knowledge base and/or skills, in the selected area of study. What you’ll learn: The Extended Project Course (EPQ) is a useful course which is recognised by most universities and gives students an insight into undergraduate approaches in autonomous research work as necessary for a dissertation. The course develops and extends from an area of personal interest or activity outside the main programme of A level study. It will be based on a topic chosen by the student(s) and agreed as appropriate by the school. Delivery of the Extended Project Qualification in Sydney Russell Sixth Form takes place during five weekly periods. This covers teaching of the necessary skills along with supervision and assessment of the student’s progress. It will involve extended autonomous work by the student and will require in total 120 guided learning hours and is completed in 1 academic year. Our students are required, with appropriate supervision, to: • choose an area of interest • draft a title and aims of the project for formal approval • plan, research and carry out the project • deliver a presentation to a non-specialist audience • provide evidence of all stages of project development and production for assessment. We think this is an exciting opportunity for students to push themselves and develop their skills in preparation for future studies at university. What subjects this goes well with: All subjects How you’ll learn: Classroom based learning/Independent research What you can do next: The EPQ course will help you develop the useful skills of project management, research and critical analysis that are useful in higher education and the world of work. A good grade EPQ is worth 70 UCAS points so very useful for university applications, particularly so if you are applying for competitive courses such as medicine, business or law. How to prepare for this course: Start brainstorming about key topics you may want to carry out your project on. Look at the AQA specification to see the overview of the course.
