Who is the course for? This course is for students who want to continue studying physics after GCSE. You'll already be familiar with some of the topics like forces and electricity, but the A level will give you the chance to study these and some new ones, in much greater depth. You might be choosing physics because you're headed for a scientific career, though it will give you transferable skills that can be used in a wide range of non-scientific careers too. You'll need a keen interest in the subject and good mathematical skills, as A level Physics must be studied in tandem with A level Mathematics. What you’ll learn: The Physics course covers a wide range of topics, including electromagnetics, quantum physics, mechanics as well as cosmology, oscillatory motion and medical physics. It is split into three papers: The first paper covers forces, motion, astrophysics and the Newtonian mechanics. The second paper covers electromagnetism, photons, particles and medical imaging techniques. The third paper is synoptic and tests the student’s ability to form links between topics. A study Physics gives you a range of transferrable skills, including analysis, practical and written communication. It opens doors to many different professions, as varied as engineering, cosmology and law and is a highly academic subject sought after by prestigious universities for a huge number of courses. GCSE Grade 7 or 7-7 Combined Science, GCSE English language Grade 5 plus study Maths at A level Physics can only be studied in conjunction with A level Mathematics.
Assessment is through final examination at the end of the course. There will be 3 exam papers each of 2 hours duration. Exams will comprise short-answer, multiple choice, extended answer, critical analysis and questions on practical techniques. Practical skills are assessed throughout the course.
