Course summary

Who is the course for? This course is for anyone moving on from GCSE with a keen interest in acting, directing and performing. You may be choosing this course because you're interested in working in the theatre or aiming to study drama or performing arts at university, though it will provide you with a range of transferable skills including creativity, communication and teamwork that can be used in a variety of careers. This course compliments other arts and humanities subjects such as English language, English literature and history. What you’ll learn: At A Level Drama, you will study a range of plays, theatre styles and theatre practitioners that will develop not only your theatre-making skills, but also you critical thinking, collaborative skills and character. For component one, you will have to devise an original piece of theatre in the style of a theatre practitioner and this will be accompanied by a portfolio documenting your process and evaluating its outcomes. For component 2, you will perform two extracts from two different plays; one as a monologue, another as a group piece. For component 3, you will sit a written paper that asks you to evaluate a theatre production, how you would perform and design a play, and discuss a directorial concept that you have envisaged for a set text. A Level Drama is considered very highly amongst universities and employers because of the huge array of transferrable skills that the course will give you. What subjects this goes well with: English Literature, Sociology, Politics, History and Psychology How you’ll learn: Class/Studio based learning What you can do next: You will develop transferable skills such as confidence, self-presentation, communication, teamwork and organisation: useful skills for many careers. You could go in to university or drama school performing arts courses. Talented students may secure performance (acting, singing, dancing) and production roles in the industry. There are employment and apprenticeship opportunities in arts administration, backstage theatre roles and entry level roles in media, broadcasting and events promotion. How you'll be assessed

How you will be assessed Through a written examination paper of 2 hours and 30 minutes, a portfolio documenting a devised original performance piece and its evaluation along with a recording of the performance. There will also be a further externally assessed group performance or design realisation, monologue or duologue.
