What you’ll learn: During your studies of History at Sydney Russell you will learn about search for rights, freedoms and greater equality during the twentieth century. You will study how, in the USA, the quest for political, social and economic advancement looked mainly to reform existing structures. In studying South Africa, you will see how this quest led to more radical outcomes, bringing an end to the apartheid regime. Studying two different countries allows students to develop a greater understanding of both similarities and differences in the search for greater rights, freedoms and equality in the twentieth century world and think about the challenges we face today to ensure these rights for all. You will also complete coursework on the causes of the Great War through independent research and the study of different historical interpretations and perspectives. Finally, you will study the quest for rights and freedoms in a different context by learning about the fascinating and turbulent relationship between Great Britain and her closest neighbour: Ireland. This will also enable you to question ideas around nationality and identity and give you an insight into why issues with Ireland today are still of such national importance.
