Course summary

Who is the course for? Any students who have a passion for Spanish language and Hispanic culture, have sat Spanish GCSE and achieved a minimum of grade 6. What you'll learn? 1. Aspects of Hispanic society: modern and traditional values, the impact of the internet and social media on society in Spanish-speaking countries and equal rights and the role of women in Hispanic culture, 2. Multiculturalism in Hispanic society: immigration, racism and integration. 3. Artistic culture in the Hispanic world: modern day idols, Spanish regional identity and cultural heritage. 4. Aspects of political life in the Hispanic world: Hispanic youth and politics, monarchies and dictatorships in Spanish-speaking countries, popular social movements (strikes and protests). 5. IRP – Independent Research Project of your greatest area of interest What subjects this goes well with: Sociology, Psychology, Law, Politics, English Language, French, German, Business Studies, History, Geography How you'll learn: First half term will be used to go through key grammatical aspects with students as the aim is the rest of the course is delivered 95% in target language. You will have five lessons a week, two on will be on a topic, two on another, and one lesson a week will be for either grammar, IRP or film/book. Students will be expected to spend five additional hours a week in revision and homework. What you can do next: Studying Spanish at A level gives you the opportunity to live and work in any Spanish speaking country in the world! Equally, in our globalised world, speaking and writing another language will help you to forge international links that are inaccessible to others. You will have a broader range of career options, not just in the UK but for global companies and organisations that need your ability to network in another tongue. All organisations need good communicators, and as a linguist you may have the upper hand. You could embark on careers such as being a broadcast journalist, international development worker, tour manager, diplomatic service officer or an interpreter.
