Course summary

The Pearson Edexcel A Level in Drama and Theatre consists of two non-examination assessment components and one externally examined paper. Component 1 - Devising requires students to devise an original performance piece from a play extract, in a specific practitioner style. Component 2 requires students to perform two extracts from two different play texts, either in the form of a monologue, duologue or group performance. Component 3 is the written examination where students will be asked to write a response to their study of a live theatre production in Section A. They will answer two essay questions on their response to a set text, from the point of view of a performer and a designer in Section B. Section C requires students to interpret a different set text from a director's viewpoint and answer how they would realise this play in a particular practitioner's style.

Entry requirements

To study Drama and Theatre studies you will need a minimum of a grade 6 in GCSE Drama. It is possible to study it as a new subject, to do so you would need to achieve at least a grade 6 in English Language.

How you'll be assessed

Component 1 - Devising: Written portfolio is worth 60marks. Performance is worth 20marks. (40% NEA) Component 2 - Text In Performance: Group performance is worth 36marks. Monologue/duologue is worth 24marks. (Externally assessed by visiting examiner. 20%) Component 3 -Theatre Makers in Practice written examination. 2 hours 30 minutes. Section A 20 marks, Section B 36 marks, Section C 24 marks. (40 %)
