Course summary

A student of Psychology will engage with a number of psychological concepts - they will gain knowledge of the key approaches to Psychology; from the biological discipline to the humanistic approach, from the outlook of the behaviourists to the school of cognitive psychological thought. This knowledge underpins everything we study in Psychology and is pivotal to the understanding of the realm of Psychology as a discipline including the importance of the scientific process to assess, interpret and analyse statistical data as well as evaluating therapies and treatments in terms of their appropriateness and effectiveness. During both years of the qualification, students will continuously apply Research Methods gained through classroom experience of practical Psychology, where they will scrutinise Psychology as a science and understand the process of designing and conducting psychological research.

Entry requirements

To study Psychology you will need a minimum of a grade 6 in English Language, Mathematics and a grade 6 in Biology (or a 6-6 in Combined Science).

How you'll be assessed

Paper 1: Introductory Topics in Psychology Paper 2: Psychology in Context Paper 3: Issues and Options in Psychology All three written exams are 2 hours each; 96 marks in total for each exam paper; 33.3% of A-level for each exam paper. Students will answer AO1 (knowledge), A02 (application) and A03 (evaluation) questions in the form of multiple-choice, short answers and extended essays for assessment purposes.
