Course summary

Biology A – Provides a flexible approach to teaching. The specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts of biology. Teaching of practical skills is integrated with the theoretical topics and they are assessed through the written papers and a practical endorsement. In Year 1 the focus is on foundations of Biology, looking at cell structure and behaviours, moving on to look at exchange and transport systems and finally Biodiversity, evolution and disease. In Year 2 the focus is on homeostasis and communication systems as well as ecosystems and genetics.

Entry requirements

To study Biology you would need to achieve at least a grade 6 in GCSE Biology or 7-7 in Combined Science.

How you'll be assessed

3 Papers: Paper 1 (2h15m) assesses modules 1, 2, 3 & 5 [37%]; Paper 2 (2h15m) assesses modules 1, 2, 4 & 6 [37%]; Paper 3 (1h30m) assesses all modules [26%]. There is also a non-examined practical component which is assessed within lessons and leads to a practical endorsement.
