EXAMINING BODY: Pearsons AQA ASSESSMENT AND CONTENT The core content in A Level Spanish are: Social issues and trends, Political and artistic culture, Grammar Works: Literary texts and films There are three methods of assessment which include: Paper 1: Listening , reading and writing What’s assessed Aspects of Hispanic society Artistic culture in the Hispanic world Multiculturalism in Hispanic society Aspects of political life in Hispanic society Grammar Paper 2: Writing What’s assessed One text and one film or two texts from the list set in the specification Grammar Artistic culture Paper 3: Speaking What’s assessed Individual research project One of four themes (Aspects of Hispanic society or Artistic culture in the Hispanic world or Multiculturalism in Hispanic society or Aspects of political life in Hispanic society) Some units may be subject to change, based on examination board adjustments. Paper 1 and 2 are assessed by external examinations at the end of Year 13, whilst Paper 3 is an oral exam conducted by either the centre or a visiting examiner and marked by an AQA examiner. Relevance The Spanish A Level Course helps students develop confident, effective communication skills in Spanish and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where Spanish is spoken. The course will help students to improve on their existing Spanish skills and build on the essential skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing the Spanish language. Spanish can be studied jointly with many other subjects, and such courses often offer the opportunity of a year abroad to develop linguistic skills either in Spain or in Latin America. Students will find that career prospects are enhanced by the possession of one or more foreign languages. Spanish is the third most widely spoken language, and the countries in which it is spoken include an incredible variety of cultures. During the A-Level course in Spanish, you will explore social issues and trends as well as political and intellectual life in the Spanish-speaking countries. Studying A-Level Spanish provides a fantastic opportunity to improve your linguistic skills and learn about Spain and Latin America. It is ideal for students who have a passion for languages or who want to enrich their main area of study with a second language. Minimum Entry Requirements: 1. GCSE subject specific grade required: GCSE Spanish minimum grade 6. In the absence of obtaining GCSE Spanish grade 6, students may be accepted to this course provided they have achieved GCSE English Grade 6. 2. Pre-summer work required to be completed by students: Yes 3. A passion for communication and an openness to Hispanic culture is essential. You will need to think systematically to acquire grammar and vocabulary to a high standard.
