Course summary

Course Summary The aim of this course is to equip students with advanced skills and cultural knowledge to communicate and interact with people in an authentic Mandarin-speaking environment. It also provides a sound foundation of Chinese language and culture similar to that covered within an undergraduate course. It develops an interest in, and enthusiasm for the study of language and culture. It allows students to pursue their studies in related fields and take part in wider study opportunities in the UK or abroad, and leads to further employment opportunities. Topics under consideration for study Theme 1 当代华人社会变迁 Changes in contemporary Chinese society Theme 2 中国文化 Chinese culture Theme 3 演变中的华人社会 The evolving Chinese society Theme 4 1978 年改革开放对中国的影响 The impact of the reform and opening in 1978 on China Skills that will be developed The skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are supplemented by Chinese-specific skills. The aims of the course are: • To develop the ability to understand Mandarin Chinese • To enable the student to communicate confidently and clearly • To form a sound foundation of skills, language and cultural knowledge required for further study and employment • To develop insights into the culture and civilisation of countries where Mandarin is spoken • To encourage positive attitudes to language learning and a sympathetic approach to other culture and civilisations • To further intellectual and personal development by promoting learning and social skills Post 18 opportunities As well as allowing candidates to develop advanced language skills, the course will develop knowledge in Chinese culture. In addition to providing a secure foundation for study in higher education, the course equips candidates with a range of skills for careers in business, education and the arts. Expenses Students need to purchase their Chinese language textbooks. Assessment Method Students are assessed in speaking; listening reading and translation; writing and usage; and Chinese culture at the end of Year 13.
