
The Pre-Medical school is an enrichment activity designed to support students who have serious and realistic aspirations to study medicine at university. Students will have the opportunity to explore the world of Medical Science outside of the syllabus. It will prepare students for university applications by developing their awareness of current affairs within this field, understanding of the medical profession and develop a greater appreciation of the essential skills and relevant experience required for a successful university application. They will develop their oracy and confidence while discussing ethical issues as well as current affairs. Types of activities completed: • Science book club • Listening to and discussing podcasts • Developing problem solving skills • Developing study skills in Science • Importance of work experience • Online work experience through Medical Mavericks • Visiting speakers • Possibly a trip. At the end of term 1, 30 students will be selected to receive additional support for applications to medicine. This will include university masterclasses, lectures and problem-based learning activities. In term 3, drop-in support will be available to help with personal statements and those who may be taking entry tests. Students are also encouraged to take an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in a relevant medically-related field. Partner universities include Aston, Birmingham, Keele, Leicester and Liverpool.
