BTEC National Extended Certificate in Performing Arts (Dance) QAN code 6017231/9 Dance is a very vibrant and dynamic subject which requires energy and commitment. This qualification provides the opportunity to acquire experience of performance and choreography in a range of dance styles and to engage in critical thinking about dance. The content allows students to study a subject that promotes a healthy lifestyle through an awareness of the importance of and appreciation of exercise and training. This course is intended as an introduction to the Performing Arts sector, alongside other fields of study and is the equivalent to one A Level. Year 12 will study in the same class as Year 13 students. The course explores four units, which include: Unit 1 (Year 12): Investigating Practitioners’ Work (Externally assessed). Learners are required to research a piece of professional work and explore the work practically to a given theme set by the exam board. Learners will investigate and critically analyse the contextual factors on their selected practitioners and piece of repertoire with a focus on how these relate to the identified theme and careers. Unit 2 (Year 12): Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance (Internally assessed). Learners will develop an in-depth understanding of the role and skills of a performer and dancer, as well as developing performance skills and techniques for live performance. Learners will also apply performance skills and techniques in selected styles, as well as reviewing and reflecting on the development of skills and techniques for live performance. Unit 3 (Year 13): Group Performance Workshop (Externally assessed). Learners will proactively explore a set task issued by the exam board. They will develop and present a group performance, based on a theme published within the set paper. This will be supported by formal log entries to evidence application of knowledge and developments in response to a specific stimulus. Unit 12 (Year 13): Contemporary Dance Technique. Learners will explore contemporary dance technique (Internally assessed). Learners will gain an understanding of the dance style, key influences on its development through research and practical exploration. This unit will prepare you for performing in a wide range of dance performances. Students could go onto study a Dance and Performing Arts in higher education and pply for audition opportunities and further training with specialist Dance schools or Performing Arts academies. Minimum five GCSE passes (grades 4 or 5) including English Language and Maths. Students must also meet subject specific minimum entry requirements (shown below). It is preferable to have gained at least a Merit in BTEC Level 2 Dance but consideration is given to those with relevant experience, commitment and enthusiasm for the subject. Note - Students must also pass an audition.
All units are assessed by assignment. You will follow a brief to carry out set tasks and create evidence to work-related scenarios. Assignments can include research, projects, investigations, fieldwork and experiments. They will often link theory with practical exercises. All assignment tasks heavily explore practical Dance training and skills in a range of genres, form and performance styles for various purposes.
