Course summary

A Level Religious Studies QAN code 60187001/4610 A Level Religious Studies covers a wide variety of areas whilst allowing you to develop an in depth knowledge of religious issues. It is an inclusive subject, designed for people of any faith, and people who have no faith. It is not necessary to have taken Religious Studies at GCSE, although students who have a GCSE will find that the A Level builds on their knowledge, understanding and skills. The course comprises of three components: Study of Religion - in depth examination of the religion of Islam, the fastest growing religion on the planet and the second biggest religion in the world. Students will study the history of Islam, the basic articles of Islamic faith and a range of contemporary issues such as Islamic Feminism, Religion and Science and Western Perceptions of Islam. Philosophy of Religion - study of both inductive and deductive arguments for God’s existence, as well as other philosophical debates relevant to religion such as the problem of evil and the challenges of New Atheism. Religion and Ethics - examination of key ethical theories such as Situation Ethics, Utilitarianism and Divine Command theory applied to fascinating moral dilemmas such as immigration, polyamorous relationships and nuclear warfare. The subject sits well with English, History, Psychology and Sociology. A qualification in A Level Religious Studies is useful for a variety of careers and continuing education. The academic nature of the subject means that it is held in high regard with both employers and Higher Education institutions. Entry requirements

Minimum five GCSE passes (grades 4 or 5) including English Language and Maths. Students must also meet subject specific minimum entry requirements (shown below).

How you'll be assessed

In Year 13, each of the three units will be assessed by a 2hr examination with answers required for two structured questions.
