A one year course studied in Year 12 that will develop valuable Mathematic skills and help you with the Mathematics in your other subjects. It is all about solving Mathematics problems that you will face in further study, in life and in the workplace. You will meet some new topics, but you will mostly be using Mathematics from GCSE. Where it differs is its focus on becoming skilful at applying Mathematics to real-life situations such as personal finance, estimating and making the best use of resources. You will spend more time working in groups, discussing problems and explaining your thinking. You will also learn about working with data – when it is reasonable to make assumptions and simplifications, how to analyse data, interpret results and how to communicate your findings and use them to justify your argument. These skills will help in other subjects as well as in the workplace and will empower you to criticise and question claims made by the media. Mathematical Studies provides an opportunity to take a Mathematics qualification alongside your other subjects. It keeps your Mathematics skills fresh, ready for whenever you need them and will help you develop the skills you need to confidently apply Mathematics to other subjects and in real-life situations.
GCSE Mathematics grade 5 or above. The Level Three Certificate should be studied as a fourth choice subject as it does not count as a full A Level.
The course is designed to be taught over one year with assessments at the end of the first year. This is a linear qualification equivalent to an AS Level. There are two one hour and thirty minute externally assessed exams, each weighted 50%, at the end of the course.
