Course summary

The course is a study of Greek and Roman civilization and literature in translation. Throughout time, authors, composers and artists of all nationalities have turned to the ancient world for themes for their works. It therefore combines well with other Arts subjects such as Music, Art, History, Religious Studies, Philosophy, and Languages. Students of English Literature and Drama always find the subject an invaluable aid to their understanding of the classical themes and references encountered in their courses. It is a fascinating subject in its own right and the course provides the opportunity to draw comparisons between the ancient culture and the modern world. Students are encouraged to attend Classics Days and lectures at Newcastle University as well as theatre productions. In Year 12 students study the following two topics THE WORLD OF THE HERO CULTURE AND THE ARTS In Year 13 students study the following two topics 1) THE WORLD OF THE HERO 2) BELIEFS AND IDEAS

Assessment

The A-level grade is based completely on performance in 3 exams at the end of Year 13. These exams cover everything studied throughout Years 12 and 13. Paper 1: The World of the Hero – Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid 40% Paper 2: Culture and the Arts – Greek Theatre 30% Paper 3: Beliefs and Ideas – Greek Religion 30%
