Course summary

Students will study the new AQA specification which started in September 2015 and students will study the full A-Level course. The new specification has put practical work at its heart and thus provides numerous opportunities to use practical experiences to link theory to reality, and equip students with the essential practical skills they need for future employment and higher education study. In the summer term of Year 12 the students have a week during which they carry out a range of practical ecological studies in a variety of habitats in North Northumberland. Year 1 course topics: ● Biological Molecules ● Cells ● Organisms exchange substances with their environment ● Genetic information, variation, and relationships between organisms Year 2 course topics: ● Energy transfers in and between organisms ● Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environment ● Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems ● The control of gene expression

Entry requirements

Five Grade 4 or above at GCSE or equivalent, including at least Grade 6/6 in Combined Science, or Grade 6 in Biology, and Grade 6 in Chemistry and/or Physics, plus Grade 5 in Maths.

How you'll be assessed

There are three 2-hour written exams at A-Level. ● Paper 1 assesses content from Topics 1-4, has 91 marks, and counts for 35% of the A-Level. ● Paper 2 assesses content from Topics 5-8, has 91 marks, and counts for 35% of the A-Level. ● Paper 3 assesses content from all Topics 1-8, has 78 marks counts for 30% of the A-Level, and contains a 25-mark synoptic essay question. This will involve students writing about topics from both Year 1 and Year 2. ● All three papers assess an understanding of practical skills developed during the course.
