Course summary

The course covers 3 components over the two years. The content looks at UK Politics and Core Political Ideas, the UK Government, and the Government of the USA. UK Politics and Core Ideas provides an insight into democracy and participation, why and how people vote, and influences upon them. It also covers alternative voting methods that could be considered, political parties and electoral systems. The different political ideas of conservatism, liberalism, and socialism are covered, plus one optional ideology from a choice of 5. UK Government gives you an insight into the role of parliament and MPs, its relationship with government, the judiciary, and whether they are political or not. The constitution the role of the prime minister and cabinet and the relationship between the two are also studied. The third component provides for an in-depth study of the politics and government of the USA, providing an insight into the key relationship between the president and Congress, the constitution and the Supreme Court, the electoral system in the US and the impact on Civil Rights. Politics students discuss and debate key issues during class time and are encouraged to contribute regularly to develop further their analytical and evaluative skills.

Entry requirements

Five grade 4 or above at GCSE or equivalent, including Grade 4 in English Language or English Literature.

How you'll be assessed

Each component is assessed through a separate 2-hour exam at the end of Year 13, and the A Level grade is based on performance in these three exams.
