Course summary

A-level Law provides students with an understanding of the English legal system and substantive law, including both criminal and civil law. It enables students to develop an understanding of how law is made and operates in the UK. Students will learn about procedures in the criminal and civil courts; the work of lawyers, barristers and the judiciary. Criminal law will focus on offences against the person and property including, murder and manslaughter, theft and robbery. Civil law will be explored through topics such as negligence, personal injury, economic loss, psychiatric damage and employer liability while considering the importance of concepts such as justice and morality. The importance of Human Rights in the UK is a key area of study, delving into the need to balance the rights of individuals and their conflicting interests. The course develops excellent written communication skills and research skills, while engaging the student in real life challenges. In addition, they develop analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which assist students in higher education, in the workplace and in everyday life. Throughout the course, these skills will be applied to case studies and real life situations as they unfold through extensive use of newspapers, television and the media in general.
