Course summary
This course is suitable for anyone wanting a career in health and healthcare. Careers options might include care worker, emergency care assistant and dental nurse. The college has a specialist ward equipped with: • 5 bed teaching ward consisting of electric hospital beds with pressure relief mattresses and dignity curtains • SMART mannequins enabling learners to practice dressing and undressing, taking medical observations, using the hoists, applying dressings, and providing personal care. • Mannequins to support lifting and handling • Hand washing facilities to practice infection prevention and control • Residents’ bedroom to practice application of skills in a home setting • Care setting reception • Anatomy and Physiology models to support knowledge of bodily systems Year 1 is made up of three key parts: Core: Knowledge and understanding of contexts, concepts and theories of the health industry: • Working within the health and science sector • Health, Safety and Environmental regulations in the Health and Science sector • Managing information and data within the Health and Science sector • Good Scientific and Clinical Practice • Core Science concepts • The Healthcare Science sector • Providing Person Centred Care • Health and wellbeing • Further Science concepts • Health and Safety regulations applicable in the Healthcare sector • Infection prevention and control in health specific settings • Managing personal information • English, Maths and digital skills needed in the health sector Employer set project: A project set by health specialists that requires you to apply your knowledge to a real-life problem in the industry. Year 2 is made up of two key parts: You will specialise in supporting the adult nursing team • Assist with an individual’s overall care and needs to ensure comfort and wellbeing • Assist registered health professionals with clinical or therapeutic tasks and interventions • Undertake a range of physiological measurements • Assist the adult nursing team with clinical tasks • Support individuals to meet activities of daily living • Assist with skin integrity assessments and with the care and treatment of skin conditions. Industry placement: Across the two-years, you will need to complete an exciting 45-day (315 hours) industry placement with a reputable employer. Throughout the summer and your first term, a dedicated work placement advisor is available to support you with building links with suitable employers so you can secure your placement. This is a great opportunity that will not only give you experience in an external business, but enhance your technical skills and create relationships that could result in an apprenticeship or employment.
