Course summary

The study of sociology will enable you to develop your understanding of society in a disciplined way. The course covers issues that shape how our society functions, is governed and how this affects both individuals and groups of people. You will ideally be interested in the events that shape peoples’ ultimate beliefs, their moments of tragedy, grandeur and ecstasy, together with being fascinated by the commonplace, and everyday. Families and households Covering the relationship of the family to the social structure and social change, with particular reference to the economy and state policies. You will also look at changes to patterns of marriage, cohabitation, separation and divorce. Education and research methods You will study the role and functions of the education system, including its relationship to the economy and to class structure. Beliefs in society Exploring the different theories of ideology, science and religion, including both Christian and non-Christian religious traditions. You will also explore the relationship between religious beliefs and social change and stability. Crime and deviance This unit teaches you about the different theories of crime, deviance, social order and social control. You will also learn about crime control, prevention and punishment.

Entry requirements

- GCSE grade 5 in English. - We expect students to have achieved a minimum of five grade 5 qualifications at GCSE in subjects relevant to their choices at sixth form.
