Geography is the science of how humans interact with planet Earth, studying the relationship between the human population and exploring how we live in the physical environment. Topics you will study vary from tectonic hazards to water & carbon cycles and also how places change. If the idea of learning how cities change over time or how a tectonic system operates excites you, this is the subject for you. In the first year, you will complete two fieldwork days to develop your fieldwork skills in preparation for your AS-Level examination. At A-Level (second year), there is a compulsory 3-4 day residential fieldwork trip which further hones your fieldwork skills so that you can complete your individual investigation. This investigation is worth 20%, and this qualification cannot be attained without attending the fieldwork component. Geography is a link between the sciences and the arts. It is considered to be a facilitating subject, which means it really keeps your options open for university courses so you can study Geography but also other sciences, particularly Environmental Studies. It is a fantastic, all-purpose A-Level, as you will develop such a wide range of transferable skills, which also means it is useful for Business and Economics and Law and Finance. The diverse nature of Geography means that graduates have skills for so many sectors of employment, but many will pursue careers in conservation, planning, surveying, politics, human rights, armed forces and even air traffic control.
A minimum of 6 grade 4s, including a grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language, is required. GCSE Maths must also be at a grade 5 as a minimum. A minimum of a grade 4 in GCSE Geography is also required.
The A-Level will be assessed through two examinations that are worth 80% of your final mark and also coursework which is worth 20% of your final mark. The examinations include short answer, data response and short essay-style questions.
