During this course you will read and listen to authentic foreign language materials and will study aspects of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of a country where the language is spoken. You will learn to be an effective communicator, to speak and write the language for different purposes, to use the language to express facts and ideas and to use the language to present explanations, opinions and information. At AS these skills will be practiced using material based on the following topic areas: Aspects of French-speaking Society; and Artistic culture in the French-speaking world. At A Level the following themes are added on: Social issues in French speaking society; and Aspects of political life in the French speaking world. At AS level and at A level you will also have the opportunity to study French literature and film.

At AS level you sit 2 formal papers. One for listening, reading and translation from French into English; and the second paper for translation from English into French and a written response to either a book or film that has been studied. There is also an oral examination. At A level there are also 2 formal papers. Paper 1 is listening, reading and translation into English. Paper 2 comprises of 2 written essays based on either 2 books that have been studied or one book and one film. There is also an oral examination at A Level.
