Course summary

This course will help students to develop the skills needed to succeed in today’s changing business world and will open up a wide range of opportunities in employment and for those wishing to continue to study at university. Students will acquire specific and relevant business skills in analysis, evaluation, critical thinking, and decision making that can be applied across a broad range of industries operating in multinational and global markets. The A level in Business is structured into four themes and consists of three externally examined papers. Students are introduced to business in Units 1 and 2 through building knowledge of core business concepts and applying them to business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work. Breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, with applications to a wider range of contexts and more complex business information, are developed in Units 3 and 4, requiring students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues. Students are encouraged to use an enquiring, critical and thoughtful approach to the study of business, to understand that business behaviour can be studied from a range of perspectives and to challenge assumptions. What have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to? Students who have taken this subject as one of their A levels often apply to university to study Business, Law or Marketing degrees. It matches well with Psychology as you can understand customer behaviour and apply this to marketing planning and decision making elements of the course.
