WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? Mathematics is a prized and valuable qualification. It provides the necessary support for many university courses, including medicine, human geography, biology, architecture, engineering, accounting, psychology, sociology, computer science and environmental studies. Math's A Level is not only the most commonly required subject for entry to degree courses but is also useful for those who do not want to go to university, as it is highly desirable in the work force. WHAT WILL I LEARN? Mathematics at A Level is divided into three main areas: Pure, Mechanics and Statistics. Pure Mathematics is the natural extension to GCSE, and ideas such as algebra and trigonometry are extended and new topics such as calculus are introduced and explored. It is theoretical but is expected to explain ‘real-life’ situations. Mechanics is the study of the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting upon them. Many of the ideas found in mechanics are used in the fields of cybernetics, robotics, sports science, design & technology, engineering, and physics. Statistics is the analysis and representation of information along with the ability to justify your conclusions. You will extend your knowledge of probability to include distributions and perform significance tests to further your statistical processing skills. All three examinations require students to demonstrate a high standard of algebra and problem solving, interpreting, and evaluating data and constructing rigorous proofs.
