Biology, like all sciences, is a practical subject. Throughout the course, you will carry out practical activities including using microscopes to observe cell division, dissection of animal or plant systems, aseptic technique to study microbial growth, investigating activity within cells, investigating animal behaviours and investigating distributions of species in the environment. The new syllabus includes a real emphasis on practical work – so expect lots of lab time. TOPICS IN YEAR 1 Biological molecules, cells, organisms exchanging substances with their environment and genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms. TOPICS IN YEAR 2 Energy transfers in and between organisms, organisms responding to changes in their internal and external environments, genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems and the control of gene expression.
GCSE grade 6 science and maths To secure your place at Aston Manor Sixth Form, you must achieve five GCSEs at grades 4-9 (including English and maths at grade 4).
There are three exams at the end of year two, all of which are two hours long. At least 15% of the marks for A-level Biology are based on what you learn in your practical classes.
